Lectionary #641A

Today's Saints: St. Robert Bellarmine was a Jesuit scholar and rigorous academic theologian who defended and clarified Church teaching during the Reformation and as an adviser to two popes. He was also a prolific writer. Bellarmine’s many gifts lifted him to reluctant prominence without making him prideful, and he continued to serve others through both his own works of charity and his generous sponsorship of other reformers. St. Hildegard was a German Benedictine abbess, a mystic, musician, and philospher. She is well known for her haunting musical compositions, some of which were incorporated into medieval liturgy. She was named a doctor of the Church by Pope Benedict XVII in 2012.
