Today's Saint: St. Kateri Tekakwitha was the first Native American to be canonized. Hearing about Christ from Jesuit missionaries, she chose to be a Christian at seventeen. Since Christians also brought disease and destruction to some indigenous villages, her choice was opposed by her family. She gave birth to the Gospel by being faithful to prayer and caring for children and the sick. She promised to continue her care when she reached heaven. She died at age twenty-four.
